Bohra mosque opens in Sharjah today

A newly built mosque, Al Masjid Al Fatimiyeen Al Bohra, in Manakha area opposite Etisalat in Sharjah

will be inaugurated this evening by the head of the International Dawoodi Bohra community, Dr Syedna Mohammed Burhanuddin, who graciously accepted the invitation of Anjuman e Najmi, Sharjah, the local community organisation.

Dr Sayedna Burhanuddin will arrive at Dubai international airport today and will visit a mosque in Ghusais, which is in the final stage of completion. He will arrive at the mosque in Manakha area in Sharjah at 5:30pm, after which the inauguration ceremony will begin with recitation from the Holy Quran, followed by a brief address by Dr Sayedna Burhanuddin, who will also lead Maghrib and Esha prayers at the mosque.

The foundation of the mosque in Sharjah was laid by Dr Burhanuddin in May 2000. Its construction has been completed in 38 months.

Built in the famous Fatimi architectural style, the design of the mosque is marked by simplicity and grandeur. The facade of the mosque and many arcades are replica of Al Anwar mosque at Bab ul Futooh and Al Aqmar mosque in Cairo, built 900 years ago.

The mosque, built at a cost of Dh16 million, can accommodate 8,000 worshippers. The main prayer hall is for men, while two floors are reserved for women. The geometrical designs on the wooden doors and windows of the the mosque are modelled after old mosques in India, built by Dr Burhanuddin's father, the late Dr Syedna Taher Saifuddin.

The land on which the mosque was built was presented to Anjuman e Najmi, Sharjah, by His Highness Dr Shaikh Sultan bin Mohammed Al Qasimi, Supreme Council Member and Ruler of Sharjah.
