A book on child abuse and ways to prevent it as well as the importance of the Wadeema Law, penned by a long-time UAE expat, will be released at the Sharjah International Book Fair on November 6.
The book, which serves as a comparative study on the issue of child abuse, has been authored by Mona Kamel Turky, an Egyptian writer-cum-advisor at the International Arab Organisation for Settling Disputes, Egypt. She is based in Ajman.
The 320-page book tackles crimes of moral, physical and sexual assault on children, as well as mistreatment and negligence.
"This book handles many problems children are suffering from - namely child abuse," Turky told Khaleej Times. ""I wanted to shed light on child abuse and draw the attention of parents and the whole society to the menace that children face in their life."
The book also tackles the legal texts that govern those crimes as per the international agreements on rights of children.
The book is divided into four sections. The first section tackles protection of children from exploitation and abuse. It addresses rights of children for a safe life as per the UAE laws as well as the international agreements and Shariah. The second section discusses forms of crimes on children, maltreatment and negligence. The third talks about the physiological and social effects the abuse may leave on children. The last section elaborates ways to protect and safeguard children from exploitation and maltreatment.
Asked about the message she wanted to communicate to readers, the writer said: "My main message is to parents. I want parents to look after their children, keep an eye on them, raise them well and protect them." - reporters@khaleejtimes.com
