As the second-hand car market is huge in the UAE, car scams are rampant. For sure, buying a used car will save you thousands of dirhams but not being careful can do the reverse.

Watch out for these car scams in the region:

Getting the seller's identity proof

Is the seller asking for a heavy upfront deposit? Be careful while dealing with such sellers, as there is a possibility you will never see him or the car after the money reaches him. To ensure, ask for a copy of the seller's Emirates ID and proper receipt. By doing this, you can at least recover the money in case of any scam.
Tips for buying a used car in Dubai

Pay only after ownership

If the deal is too tempting to be real, tread carefully. There are many stories on sellers absconding with the money as the buyer is lured with a cheap bargain. Never make any payment without the transfer of ownership. Transfer of ownership of cars in the UAE is a hassle-free process and money can be transferred after the car is registered in your name.

Car on loan

If the car you are buying from a seller is on loan, the real owner technically is the finance company. If you plan to pay off the lease on the car, do it only after the seller gives you a power of attorney, transferring the car to your name. Also, get the car's status verified through an RTA inspection before agreeing to pay off the loan.

Invalid warranty

A warranty will protect you from the unwelcome repair bills of the car but be cautious before shelling out a bit extra. There are chances the warranty has been cancelled or expired. Do check with the dealer if the warranty can be transferred before making the payment.

Thorough inspection

If you are investing in a used car, it is recommended that you do a thorough inspection. Get it checked by experts if everything is in place - air conditioning, odometer, engine and every spare part possible. Finalise the deal only after you are satisfied by taking the car for a ride.
