The Abu Dhabi Police are running a campaign to create awareness on the rising trend of talking on mobile phone that causes traffic accidents.
In this regard, the Community Police Section at the Khalifa Police Station participated in a campaign at Yas Mall on the theme "Don't Use Your Mobile Phone While Driving".
This campaign is implemented by Umm Al Arab Elementary School in Abu Dhabi, in cooperation with the Traffic and Patrols Branch at the station.
As a part of the campaign, a number of school students distributed awareness brochures to the public. The brochures include advice to motorists, calling upon them to refrain from using the mobile phone while driving.
Captain Salem Suhail Al Ameri, head of the community Police Section at the Khalifa Police Station, stressed the Community Police's keenness to communicate with both its partners and the civil community to implement events and activities that could enhance awareness about social and police matters.
He said: "Using a mobile phone while driving is highly distracting and extremely dangerous. Traffic crashes are increasingly being caused in part by drivers using their cell phones."
He said talking on a mobile phone while driving may cause lapses of attention, concentration and judgment. "It causes drivers to take their eyes off the road or their hands off the steering wheel often, to see who is calling and pressing a button to answer the call."
Jehan Al Shahat, national education specialist at the school, said that students expressed their wish to contribute to the efforts to enhance awareness about community and traffic matters. She said: "Students expressed their dismay at the negative impacts of using mobile phone while driving." She also stressed the importance of the police's interaction and participation in the event.
