As part of its month-long drive, the Ministry of Economy conducted an inspection of the Dubai Central Fruits & Vegetables Market in Al Aweer on Monday.
The visit is the first of more inspections to be done by the ministry during the Holy Month of Ramadan to monitor the markets and ensure that consumers are not exploited by price hike or monopolising of certain goods.
The inspection was led by Dr Hashim Al Nuaimi, director of the ministry's Consumer Protection Department and Mohammed Khamis Halian, Market Supervisor for the Dubai Municipality in the presence of local media representatives.
Al Nuaimi said consumers are not being exploited, noting that the prices are stable, with no detected increases.
He affirmed that the market is well-observed and controlled to protect consumers needs and ensure their satisfaction.
However, he drew the attention of a number of sellers to the absence of price stickers on some products.
He recommended that price marking devices be given to all vendors and platforms to clarify prices for consumers.
The management promised to provide these devices and labels before the end of the holy month.
Dr Al Nuaimi also said that the market imports 18,000 tonnes of fruits and vegetables on a daily basis during Ramadan, and traders can store products at a capacity of up to 120,000 tonnes. reporters@khaleejtimes.com
