The UAE has conducted a total of 7.5 million Covid-19 tests since the start of the pandemic, a top official has said. At 0.5 per cent, the country has one of the lowest death rates in the world. It also has among the highest recovery rates in the world at 90 per cent.
Dr Omar Al Hammadi, official spokesperson for the UAE Government, said: "The high rate of recovery is largely due to the modern and innovative treatment methods, the expansion of the scope of examinations, the availability of medical personnel and supplies, the increase in the capacity to receive cases, and the availability of a strategic stock of medicine."
In response to a question from a journalist if the recent increase in the number of positive cases is indicative of a second wave, Dr Hammadi said: "The rise in the number of cases in the UAE is not outside of the context presented by the medical and scientists' community. Our health institutions are prepared to face all challenges that may come our way."
Referring to a vaccine being trialled in the country, the official said: "We are now in the advanced stage in the development of a vaccine. Once it is fully developed, it will make a great contribution to controlling the spread of the pandemic."
Dr Hammadi reiterated the need for residents to continue wearing masks, maintain physical distancing, and take vaccinations for the seasonal flu. "Maintain a healthy diet and exercise to boost immunity. Those with high blood pressure, heart diseases and the elderly must be protected."
