Coronavirus: UAE minister Sheikh Saif bin Zayed gets Covid-19 vaccine

Abu Dhabi - In recent weeks, several ministers have received the vaccine.

Lieutenant General Sheikh Saif bin Zayed Al Nahyan, Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Interior, tweeted a picture of himself as he was administered a dose of the Covid-19 vaccine on Monday.

He took to his official Twitter handle to thank the medical staff and wrote: 'I thank the medical staff and the vaccinators. I wish everyone safety'.

On October 16, Sheikh Abdullah bin Zayed Al Nahyan, Minister of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation, also received a dose of the Covid-19 vaccine. 'Corona vaccination is our way to return to normal life', he had tweeted after he was vaccinated.

Last month, the UAE granted approval for the emergency use of the Covid-19 vaccine that is being trialled in the country. The vaccine, developed by China's Sinopharm, is now in the third and final stage of clinical trials and has so far been found safe and effective, according to authorities.

Over 31,000 volunteers had received the jab as part of the program. The vaccine is being administered to frontline workers and professionals who are at highest risk of contracting the virus. A number of top officials have also taken it.

Other UAE ministers who have taken the Covid-19 vaccine include Sheikh Abdullah bin Zayed Al Nahyan, Minister of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation; Abdulrahman Al Owais, Minister of Health and Prevention; Obaid Al Shamsi, director general of the National Emergency Crisis and Disasters Management Authority; Noura Al Kaabi, UAE Minister of Culture and Youth, Sheikh Khaled bin Mohamed bin Zayed Al Nahyan, Member of the Executive Council and Chairman of the Abu Dhabi Executive Office was administered the vaccine on September 24.

While earlier this week, the UAE approved the phase 3 clinical trials of Russia's Covid-19 vaccine Sputnik V.
