The General Department of Traffic of Dubai Police has officially launched a traffic campaign entitled 'Cross Safely', targeting jaywalkers.
Colonel Jamal al Banai, acting Director of the Traffic Department, launched the event at Al Arabi Centre Mall in the presence of other senior police officials.
He said that his campaign is one of several strategic campaigns aimed at controlling the accident rates and reducing deaths and injuries from run-over accidents.
During the three-month campaign, the police will spread awareness among people regarding traffic laws and violations, focusing on workers who are the majority of the victims in hit-and-run accidents.
Colonel Al Banai noted that 46 people were killed in run over accidents last year while the number was 39 in 2014 and 46 in 2013. Last year alone, the police have issued 64,620 fines for crossing the road from non-designated areas. The numbers were 61,391 in 2014 and 55,206 in 2013. He said that the fine for crossing road from non-designated area is Dh200.
During the campaign, the police will distribute brochures in six languages to taxi drivers and in universities and labour camps, as well as through social media.
He also urged people to check the roads properly before crossing, and to avoid reading, using mobile phones while crossing roads.
