Work on the construction of the airport in Al Manama region will begin in August this year. The project is expected to be completed in six years, according to a top government official.

His Highness Shaikh Humaid bin Rashid Al Nuaimi, Member of the Supreme Council and Ruler of Ajman, and Shaikh Ammar bin Humaid Al Nuaimi, Crown Prince of Ajman, were briefed about the master plan of the airport at the presentation made by the White Lake Consortium Group, which has inked an agreement with the Ajman government to carry out the airport development work.

The proposed airport site is located in Al Manama region. The airport will be built in an area of 60 million sq-feet, 60km away from Ajman City, with the main road to Manama linking Fujairah on the east coast and Sharjah on the west coast.

The airport will accommodate various types of aircraft, serving at least one million passengers a year and handling a minimum of 400,000 tonnes of cargo. The airport will have the latest technologies like the modern European airports have.

Shaikh Humaid said the airport would contribute positively to the development of Ajman, and would boost the UAE economy.

"An Airport City, including residential buildings, hotels, restaurants and shopping malls and centres, will also be established," he noted. The presentation was attended, among others, by Spain's Prince Bruno Gomez Acebo de Borbon, Prince Fernando Gomez Acebo de Borbon, Princess Maria Zurita de Borbon, as well as Dr Manuel Pineiro, Ambassador of Spain to the UAE and high-ranking dignitaries.
