Dubai's Roads and Transport Authority (RTA) began the second workshop of the 'Accessible Environments for Persons with Disability' as part of its efforts to realise the standards and principles of the 'Universal Design' undertaken by the General Secretariat of the Executive Council of Dubai Government, the Community Development Authority, Dubai Municipality and a number of local property developers.
The objective is to make Dubai an entirely disabled-friendly city by 2020, under the initiative of Shaikh Hamdan bin Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Crown Prince of Dubai and Chairman of the Executive Council, entitled 'My Community..a City for Everyone'. The project is one of the key deliverables of the Dubai Disability Strategy 2020 launched by Shaikh Mansour bin Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Chairman of the Higher Committee for the Protection of the Rights of Persons with Disabilities.
"The second workshop entitled: Disabled-Friendly Transit Means and Facilities, discussed the challenges of configuring public utilities, facilities, services and infrastructure to meet the needs of this segment and serve objectives of the project" said Yousef Al Rida, CEO of RTA Corporate Administrative Support Services Sector and Chairman of the team tasked with transforming Dubai into an accessible city.
"The workshop included a presentation on transit modes and special needs, which highlighted the best designs of roads, public transport, pavements and parking slots, and how to customise them to the needs of this category to ensure their safe and smooth mobility between various transit modes," he added.
