Fines of up to Dh100,000 shall be levied against residents caught dumping waste in undesignated areas, Abu Dhabi authorities have warned.
The Abu Dhabi Waste Management Centre (Tadweer) and its partners issued the warning as they launched an awareness drive, under the second phase of a campaign called 'Al Dhafra Deserves'.
Besides promoting environmental conservation in the Abu Dhabi's Al Dhafra region, the campaign focuses on educating the community about proper waste disposal and the dangers of dumping garbage randomly.
The authorities have reiterated that leaving construction or sewage waste in undesignated areas is an offence punishable by a Dh100,000 fine. Improper disposal of farm waste comes with a Dh10,000 penalty.
Residents who throw their trash on the street - outside designated bins - will also be penalised with a fine of up to Dh1,000. Violators will then be ordered to dispose of the garbage properly.
Abandoning pets and other animals is another violation that comes with a Dh2,000 fine, the authorities said.
Month-long awareness drive
As part of the campaign - which will run throughout October - special teams have been visiting shops, residential areas, farms, ranches and construction sites in Al Dhafra to spread awareness.
In collaboration with the Abu Dhabi Department of Economic Development, Abu Dhabi Agriculture and Food Safety Authority, and Al Dhafra Region Municipality, Tadweer's specialised teams will host activities to educate the public about the consequences of irresposible garbage disposal.
Tadweer is set to distribute over 8,000 awareness leaflets to farms in Al Dhafra, in close collaboration with Adafsa. These leaflets include instructions and recommendations that can guide farmers, workers and residents on waste management.
