New radars have been installed along Ras Al Khaimah's roads to curb speeding motorists and reduce traffic accidents and casualties.
Most of the new speed cameras have been installed on Seeh and Dahisa roads, as well as other hot spots where many speeding violations have been recently reported.
Col Ahmad Al Sham Al Naqbi, director of the RAK traffic and patrols department, said mobile radars are operational on the road from Saqr hospital to Bin Ibrahim locality and the road close to the new officers club at Dahisa area.
"Speed road signs have been installed on the said roads to easily see and comply with speed limit," he said.
"The maximum speed limit on these roads is 80kmh while the radars start flashing at 101kmh, taking into account the 20kmh buffer."
He added that the speed limit was determined after an intensive study was conducted.
"The road capacity and the number of cars on them were taken into account to ensure safe traffic flow."
Col Al Naqbi said that the location of the radars is changed from time to time as needed.
They are installed along roads where speeding violations have been reported repeatedly.
Speeding is the reason behind many deadly accidents along this arterial road and other roads of the emirate, Col Al Naqbi pointed out.
"Most motorists involved in speeding violations are youngsters and unlicensed drivers," he said. "Their parents allow them to drive their vehicles irresponsibly."
Late last year the RAK Police traffic patrols stopped 69 students driving without a licence.
Recently, a reckless motorist was caught speeding at 133km/hr on Corniche Al Qawasim road, where the prescribed speed limit is only 50 km/hr.
