Drop in family disputes due to over-spending

Ras Al Khaimah - The drop is due to the awareness programmes to enlighten couples about the negative impact of over-spending.

Family disputes on spendthrift lifestyles have significantly dropped among local and foreign families in the emirate of Ras Al Khaimah this year so far.
Official figures show that only four such complaints were registered in the first nine months as compared to 20 during the same period last year.
Jassim Al Makki, manager of community services department with RAK Courts, said most of the complaints filed were due to overspending on marriage parties, wedding dresses, and buying unnecessary items.
"The drop is due to the awareness programmes run by the department to enlighten couples about the negative impact of over-spending on the family budget."
Such type of spending is blamed for many of the family disputes reported, he added. "It even leads to family instability since many couples are forced to take loans to meet their needs."
Makki said the UAE society is not familiar with this phenomenon. "It is mainly an outcome of mixing with other foreign cultures and traditions. Hence our prudent leadership has advised Emiratis to rationalise their wedding expenses."
Young people should not be burdened with too many debts, he stressed.
Such negative practices are however significantly decreasing due to awareness programmes, Al Makki pointed out. "People no longer feel the need to store foodstuff in large amounts as was the case before."
