A Bangladeshi man has been sentenced to life in prison by the Sharjah Shariah Court of First Instance for drug trafficking.
The Anti-Narcotics Department of the Sharjah Police received information that the man possessed marijuana and was looking to sell it. The police set a trap and undercover police struck a deal to buy the drugs from him.
The 36-year-old man was arrested while handing over the drugs to the undercover officer against Dh500 per packet. The police found five packs that contains 58 gram of marijuana in his possession. During the interrogation, he confessed to the crime and told the court that he possessed the drug for his personal use.
Commenting on the verdict, a prosecutor told Khaleej Times that people should be aware that the UAE has a zero tolerance policy towards drugs in general. Anti-drug laws are very strict in the UAE and those who are found possessing and using drugs will be sentenced to at least four years in jail even if the quantity is very low.
In 1996, the UAE has passed a legislation allowing death penalty for drug trafficking, and people would be prosecuted, fined and possibly be imprisoned for being if they found under the influence of illegal drugs. Regardless of the drug quantity, the person who caught for drug trafficking will be sentenced to life term, he said.
