A construction worker, who was drunk when he groped and punched a woman as she was walking home at night, was sentenced to two years in jail on Monday.
The 22-year-old worker was also ordered by the Court of First Instance to pay a Dh 1,000 worth of fine for drinking alcohol without a license. He will be deported after completing his jail terms.
The incident happened on January 31, last year as the Filipina woman was walking home late at night in Al Satwa.
"I was carrying some groceries I had just bought from the supermarket around 10:30 pm and was heading home when the accused, who was coming my way, suddenly groped me," the 26-year-old complainant (an employee) said.
She hit his hand with the grocery bag before he punched her in the chest causing her to fall down.
She screamed for passersby's help.
As none came for her help she ran after the accused and he then tried to punch her again before a Filipino man restrained him.
"We moved to the scene and arrested the accused. The woman had bruises on her hands. He was very drunk and kept saying he was sorry and that he would not repeat what he did. But we could not understand what he did because he was not sober," a police sergeant told the prosecutor.
The defendant was then taken to Bur Dubai police station.
He may appeal the ruling within 15 days.
