A drunk driver who caused a fatal car crash in Abu Dhabi has been ordered to pay Dh500,000 to an insurance company, which provided compensation to the victims' families. One person died and another was injured in the accident.
Investigations showed that the man was driving under the influence of alcohol when the crash happened. The two victims were both passengers in his car. One of them died on the spot while the other had to spend months in a hospital because of the injuries he sustained.
The insurance firm that covered the man's vehicle had paid the blood money to the family of the victim who died, along with the compensation that had to be settled with the injured passenger. These payments amounted to Dh496,000, court records showed.
The company then filed a lawsuit against the driver, demanding that he pay back the money it shelled out for the compensation. It argued that the accident was caused by the man's recklessness and failure to abide by traffic rules.
The Abu Dhabi Court of First Instance issued a ruling, obliging the driver to pay the insurance company Dh496,429, in addition to paying all legal expenses incurred by the plaintiff.
