A man stabbed to death a former roommate when he gatecrashed a Christmas party last year.
The Court of First Instance heard that the 36-year-old Sri Lankan worker was very drunk when he spotted the victim intruding into the party and having a brawl with his two brothers.
During interrogation, the defendant claimed he was not even aware where he stabbed the victim as he was under the influence of alcohol. He turned himself in to the police in less than two days after the incident. The accused had fled the scene after stabbing his former roommate and sought refuge at his friend's place in Sharjah.
He has been charged with murder and consuming alcohol without a license.
The defendant's brother, 35, said, "We were celebrating Christmas at a house in Hor al Anz. There were about ten people, including women, and we were consuming alcohol. Two men came in uninvited and my brother got provoked when he heard them hurling abuses at him. I tried to hold my brother back when I saw him bringing a knife, but he grabbed me by the neck. I let him go outside and followed him. My wife told me not to intervene but I learned later from her that my brother stabbed the other man. People gathered soon thereafter and an ambulance and police arrived," he told the prosecutor.
The defendant's 34-year-old friend said he saw him waiting outside the meat shop where he worked in Sharjah at 7:30am on December 26, 2016.  "I learned from him he was in some kind of trouble after he stabbed someone. He cried and I lent him Dh100, took him to my place and gave him a clean shirt."
A police officer said the murder was reported around 11pm on December 25, 2016. "The victim's body was lying on the road near a grocery in Al Manama area. The knife was found nearby."
Around two days later, the defendant turned himself in at Al Muraqqabat police station. He claimed he stabbed the victim over a previous dispute. He said the victim had earlier broken into his room and stolen Dh200. He added he was not aware where he stabbed the victim or how many times he knifed him as he was very drunk. And that he did not intend to kill him."
The forensic report showed he stabbed the victim deeply and fatally in the chest.
The trial has been adjourned to May 24.
