Banning the illegal practice of using private vehicles to transport passengers, after quality control inspectors reported several violations.
The corporation’s ruling essentially bans the illegal practice of transporting passengers by private and unlicensed vehicles for a nominal fee. Speaking to Khaleej Times, an official from DTC said that recently a crackdown was held against such vehicles by the corporation.
He said that the main locations where the violations were rampant were crowded areas especially Deira Bus Station, Bur Dubai Bus Station, small bus stations at Salahuddin Road, Karama and Satwa where Dubai Transport Corporation buses operate from, and in Dubai Airport’s terminals 1 and 2.
The official also said that the ruling has been put in place to guarantee the safety and security of passengers in the emirates as they are assured of quality services from the corporation and the three franchise companies, which include Metro, Cars and National Taxi.
As per rules, the violators are issued tickets and asked to pay fines. “Violators mostly use rent-a-car vehicles and operate them as taxis,” he explained. The issuance of tickets is supported by Dubai Police Traffic Department.
“Those who wish to pay for the fine have to report to the nearest police station. DTC does not collect the money for the fines,” he said. He also said those refusing to pay fines would have to go to the Dubai courts for the necessary action. DTC’s quality controllers, with the assistance of the corporation’s franchise companies and the Dubai Police, issue tickets for Dh2,500 for first-time violators, and Dh5,000 for repeated violations.
