Fifteen workers were injured after a minivan crashed into another vehicle on Hassah road in Dubai’s Saih Shuaib area this morning, the police said.
Initial investigations revealed that the accident happened at around 8am when one of the drivers overtook another vehicle on a wrong lane, said Brig Saif Muhair Al Mazrouei, director of the General Department of Traffic Police.
As soon as the accident was reported in the morning, police patrols and an ambulance rushed to the site. The injured — including 12 Pakistanis and three Bangladeshis who are all daily wage workers — were taken to the nearby NMC Royal Hospital in DIP on a bus ambulance.
The workers were from two separate companies, a scrap manufacturer and an electric panels firm.
Although no casualties were reported, two of the 15 workers were said to be in a critical condition and had been admitted into the intensive care unit of the hospital, according to a spokesperson from NMC Healthcare group.
While seven workers were discharged after being treated for minor injuries, others will be required to undergo surgeries.
“Due to the impact and the metal sheets and rods in the automobile, about six of them required suturing, owing to deep cuts,” said Dr Mahesh Krishna Ram, general surgery specialist at the hospital.
Dr Sunil Jayant Kulkarni, orthopaedic surgeon, said he was planning to first stabilise the patients and assess the gravity of injuries before proceeding with an operation.
Brig Al Mazrouei urged all motorists to drive with caution and abide by traffic law and rules to avoid such incidents.
