Keeping in mind that 34 fires were reported during Ramadan in 2018, the Dubai Civil Defence has completed preparations for the upcoming Ramadan next week.
Major-General Rashid Thani Al Matroushi, director of the Dubai Civil Defence, said that their teams are ready to ensure safety for all round the clock. "Ramadan is associated with many social customs - frequent visits from families and friends as well as various Ramadan majlises. The diversity of social gatherings at homes and Ramadan tents increases the use of heat and fire in kitchens for longer periods," he said.
"Safety precautions must be taken while in kitchens as it is one of the main sites for home fires during Ramadan. This might be due to the frequent operation of gas stoves to cook food, in addition to the presence of electrical appliances, and operation of oil-contaminated air-conditioners for extended periods.
"Neglect is one of the main reasons behind the outbreak and spread of fires. Most accidents that occur in homes, tents and other sites are caused by neglect, lack of safety measures or lack of identification of effective ways to avoid accidents. Suhoor and Iftar activities are often concentrated around the kitchen and children often distract their parents during the cooking process," he added.
"In any circumstances, the civil defence teams are ready to meet the needs of the community and individuals in terms of protection, safety or emergency situations," he said, urging the public to take safety precautions.
