An employee at a clinic for medical fitness tests, who tried to steal a report stating a Pakistani man suffered tuberculosis in return for Dh 20, has been charged with bribery in court.
The 42-year-old Indian, who worked as an office assistant at the clinic in Al Muhaisna, where medical fitness tests are done for residence visa stamping and renewal, is accused of abusing his job that gave him access to the room where documents, tests results and reports were kept to steal the report in return for Dh 20 worth of a bribe offered by another Indian man.
The latter, who is a 43-year-old driver, has been charged with criminal complicity in the attempted theft and bribery.
The incident took place on April 26 and was reported to Al Qusais police.
The clinic employee admitted during the public prosecution investigation that he was contacted by the second accused and asked to steal the test result belonging to a Pakistani man. The employee was told the visa applicant took the test on April 13. He was offered Dh 20 for the favour.
He confessed to the prosecutor he told the second accused to wait for him in the clinic corridor until he stole the report. However, a doctor spotted him about to hand the other man the document. He alerted the security guard and the employee was caught.
The second accused tried to run away but the guard caught him too.
During the questioning at the police station, it was known the first accused had been working as an office assistant at the medical clinic for three years and his job was to move files within the clinic depending on the appointments of customers, as instructed by a health inspector.
The office assistant, who is referred to as a public employee in the prosecution records, admitted during the investigation a charge of attempt theft of a public property and collecting a bribe in return for an unlawful favour.
The court will hand down a verdict on September 28.
