Dubai Customs recycles fakes worth Dh3.2 million

Dubai - This came as the department held a video meeting with the French and the US diplomatic missions in Dubai to join forces in protecting IPR and preventing counterfeits.

The Dubai Customs has recycled counterfeit products worth Dh3.2 million in 2020 so far, a top official has said. Over 148,700 fakes from 46 international brands were recycled instead of being destroyed, according to Yousef Ozair Mubarak, director of intellectual property rights (IPR) department.
This came as the department held a video meeting with the French and the US diplomatic missions in Dubai to join forces in protecting IPR and preventing counterfeits.
The meeting discussed ways of recycling counterfeit products and how to work together to ensure "the best protection" of the rights of French and US brands, Dubai Customs said in a statement.
"The IPR department is very serious about the rights of international brands and how to protect them from counterfeiting," Mubarak said. "Instead of destroying counterfeit goods, we offer them the option of recycling them as this is more environmentally friendly."
Trademark owners are informed once fake items bearing their brand names are seized so they can witness the recycling.
