The 2015 edition of the Education UK Exhibition opened its doors to the public at Dubai World Trade Centre on Wednesday afternoon, offering students an opportunity to learn about educational opportunities in Great Britain.
The "EDUKEX 2015" exhibition - hosted by the British Council UAE - features 42 of the UK's leading universities, including King's College, the School of African and Oriental Studies, City University London and the London School of Economics and Political Science.
The exhibit seeks to provide UAE students with the information necessary to pursue undergraduate, postgraduate and MBA programmes in the UK, as well as provide information on visa requirements and scholarship opportunities. "This enables us to showcase the world-class education that's on offer in the UK," said Marc Jessel, the British Council's UAE country director.
"What we're really seeking to do is target young people who are at the end of their school career or perhaps considering to do a masters, and who are in need of making a life change about their next step."
Jessel added that studies have shown that UK-educated students are more likely to be employable and command a higher salary once they've returned home.
"It's not just the educational experience, but also the intercultural experience," Jessel added.
"We know that when you study within an intercultural environment with lots of students from all around the world, you also develop those intercultural skills, which are incredibly important, particularly in this environment in the UAE."
A wide variety of programmes were represented at the event, including engineering and technology, health medicine, IT, business, hospitality and creative arts and design.
"Engineering and business are the two most popular. The third most popular after business and engineering is actually social studies," Jessel noted.
"The key point is that the UK can meet the needs of students from all walks of life."
According to the British Council, about 3,300 UAE-based students go to study in London in any given year, of which approximately 1,500 to 1,600 are UAE nationals.
"What we would want to see next year is to see that number go up to 3,500 or 3,600," Jessel said. EDUKEX 2015 will remain open on Thursday, between 5pm and 9pm. ­­-
