Two maids were recently nabbed in Dubai for stealing Dh13,000 worth of gold from their sponsor - who didn't even know she lost her jewellery until the Dubai Police informed her of the arrest.
Thanks to the Dubai Police's criminal intelligence, the two Asians - who were trying to sell their Indian sponsor's gold rings, necklaces and chains - were caught as they could not provide any proof that the items were theirs.
Brigadier-General Jamal Salem Al Jallaf, director of the General Department of Criminal Investigation, said police officials detected a possible case of theft, prompting them to interrogate the duo who then confessed that they had stolen the jewellery.
They admitted that they had been taking the items, one by one, until they thought they had enough to sell, the police said. Their unsuspecting sponsor, an Indian housewife, was shocked when the police told her about the incident. Although she had been spending most of her time at home, she said she didn't notice anything was amiss, the police said.
Colonel Mohammed Ahli, deputy director of the General Directorate of Criminal Investigation, said: "She expressed her gratitude to the Dubai Police by sending a 'thank you message' through the Dubai Police Leaders Programme. She said she is proud to live in Dubai, where authorities prioritise residents' safety, security and happiness."
Col Ahli advised housewives to regularly communicate with their maids and clearly determine their responsibilities. While developing a good relationship with them is a must, the family also has to be wary of possible crimes, he said.
