The Dubai Municipality has inaugurated the Al Quoz Abattoir, behind Al Wahda Centre. "The new abattoir, open from 6am to 11pm, has a capacity for processing 1,500 small and 50 large animals daily," said Ali Al Hammadi, head of abattoir section in the municipality.

"The new abattoir is open throughout the week, except on Fridays. It has a common hall for small and large animals and the customers are allowed to see the slaughtering, skinning and cutting process directly and clearly from the moment of handing over the animal until the meat is delivered," said Al Hammadi. "All the equipment at the abattoir is high quality mechanical equipment capable of protecting the safety and health of consumers. The municipality has contracts with companies specialised in leather to take all animal skins and waste, unsuitable for human consumption, to protect public health," he explained.

Al Hammadi said that the abattoir has a men's lounge, a women's lounge, a refrigerator for cooling meat and ten sheds for storing livestock for traders before the slaughtering process. "The abattoir also has an area for selling meat and it follows smart online ways to meet the needs of the public. The Al Qusais abattoir also follows smart ways," he said.

Al Hammadi explained the readiness of the abattoirs in Dubai to meet the needs of the public in a healthy and safe manner. "The external butchers do not observe even the simple rules of public health and hygiene whereas the government abattoirs ensure all the aspects of care for slaughtered animals before slaughter too as the animals are subjected to medical and health examination and also on the meat after slaughter to ensure their safety and fitness for human consumption."

He said that the prices in the Al Quoz Abattoir are like in the rest of the abattoirs in the emirate and has not increased or changed because the work of the municipality in this area is a service and protection of the public health is not for profit.
