The Dubai Municipality has collected a staggering 50million gallons of oil, grease, fat and waste food from the emirate's sewage network and got them recycled into raw materials for soap, wax, bio-fuels etc.
The Director of the Drainage and Irrigation Network Department at the municipality, Hassan Makki, said the civic body had devised a plan to collect, transport and recycle the oils and grease wastes from food establishments as per the local order No 8 of 2002 on control over sewage systems.
"The plan is also associated with the administrative order No 181 of 2007, which calls for eateries and restaurants to adhere to the enforced laws and rules governing the sewage systems, as disposing oils and grease penetrates into the sewage network systems. This may cause the pipes of the network to be blocked, which result in an environmental disaster. Thus efforts have been made by the municipality to preserv the public health in the emirate without just dumping such oil," he warned.
Under the local order and the administrative ordinance, he said, all establishments which deal in oils and grease were bound to fix gully traps as part of the sewage network on the basis of the fact that oils and greases often float on the surface of the gully trap. Hence it is easy to collect these oils and separate them away from the sewage network section to ensure the flow of the sewers in the sewage pipeline network, and ensure there are no oils that hinder the move of the sewers.
The sewers are gushed out through the sewage stations in Warsan and Jebel Ali, he said.
Makki said the municipality had allowed 28 accredited companies for transporting the oil and grease waste collected in the traps installed at food establishments.
Restaurants, hotels and other food establishments have to pay reasonable charges before taking them to the Al Serkal Group for recycling.
The Envirol Oil Treatment Plant recycles oils and grease and help maintain a safe and sustainable environment for the residents in the emirate.
