Motorists in Dubai will be warned about the dangers of stopping in the yellow crisscross grid - known as the yellow box - at traffic light junctions.
The Dubai Police will run a campaign under the theme 'Do not stop in a yellow box junction' till November 12.
Colonel Dr Jasim Khalil Merza, director of the Dubai Police's awareness department, said the campaign aims to eradicate traffic jams in the yellow box. Some drivers enter the box even when there is a traffic jam ahead, he said. This leads to obstruction of traffic and is a major cause of arguments between motorists.
As part of the campaign, awareness programmes will be aired on Noor Dubai, Abu Dhabi TV and other channels. Messages will be sent out via the police's social media channels as well.
Colonel Jamal Al Banai, acting director of the traffic department, said the federal traffic law has a provision that prohibits stopping in the yellow box junction. Another provision prohibits motorists from impeding normal flow of traffic.
He said a penalty of Dh500 will be imposed on drivers who stop at the yellow box junction.
Adhering to this rule, he said, will curb traffic jams, prevent obstruction of pedestrian movement and reduce chances of major traffic accidents. -amira@khaleejtimes.com
