Until now, the difference in the minimum age for sale of cigarettes and other tobacco products as stipulated in the federal law, and as per a by-law issued by Dubai in 2008, has been a point of disagreement between experts, with many favouring the age 20 bar, which, they believe, helps protect youth from getting exposed to tobacco at an early age.
“The federal law will supersede and replace the earlier regulation issued by Dubai,” Redha Salman, Director of Public Health and Safety at Dubai Municipality, said on Monday.
“We are going with the federal law and not fining youngsters aged 18 (and above) for buying tobacco. But we are definitely discouraging them,” he said. The municipality is expected to issue notifications to this effect soon.”
“The issue has been discussed,” said Dr Wedad Al Maidoor, Head of the National Tobacco Control Committee at the Ministry of Health. “Though the age has been fixed at 18, we will push for an increase,” she added.
Federal and local officials met on Monday to draft anti-tobacco by-laws.
