Dubai school reminds parents to be vigilant on digital life of kids

The school also took note of the 'The Blue Whale Game' which was featured in the news this week.

Parents at GEMS Wellington Academy - Silicon Oasis were given a reminder by the school administration to be vigilant and to keep a watchful eye on their kids' online activities. In a statement sent to Khaleej Times, Christine Nasserghodsi, director of innovation, GEMS Education, said: Digital citizenship is a core part of the digital curriculum at our schools. This includes understanding both the benefits and risks of different online activities."
"Our teachers are trained to identify risky behaviours and engage in an early intervention if a child shows signs of withdrawing," Nasserghodsi added.
GEMS Wellington Academy - Silicon Oasis wrote to the parents: "You might be aware of a number of issues currently being discussed in news forums and social media. As a school, we would like parents to be aware of these issues and to highlight the importance of monitoring your child, their use of social media and what they are watching at home."
The school said that it has come to their attention "that some children are watching a new Netflix series titled 13 Reasons Why with an R-18 certification".
The TV series is based on a novel about a story of a 17-year old girl who takes her own life and leaves behind 13 recordings addressed to those she says played a role in her decision. "While the show discusses very important topics, it portrays situations where youth are dealing serious issues without getting or receiving proper support from adults,"
