Dubai will soon get a specialised care centre for juvenile delinquents.
The decision was announced on Tuesday by Sheikh Hamdan bin Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Crown Prince of Dubai, following a meeting of The Executive Council of Dubai.
It was undertaken on the basis of a study conducted by Dubai’s Community Development Authority (CDA) in collaboration with Dubai Police, Dubai Public Prosecution and other concerned entities.
The centre will provide rehabilitation activities to reintegrate delinquents into the community and educate them about their rights and responsibilities as members of society.
It will also develop proactive solutions to tackle the root causes of juvenile delinquency and work with the concerned authorities to reduce repeat offences.
"We aim to rehabilitate juveniles and reintegrate them into society, based on the highest global standards in this field," said Sheikh Hamdan.
"The collaboration of government entities is core to the concept of juvenile rehabilitation in developing proactive solutions that address the causes of delinquency," he added.
Sheikh Hamdan noted that some of the other objectives of the centre will include working with schools and neighbourhood communities to help them play a bigger role in addressing the needs of youngsters — and educating families about how they can better support their children.
The council further recommended the establishment of a unified database for juveniles in the emirate as well as a child protection hotline, operated by the centre.
The centre will also seek to establish a single umbrella entity to follow up on all cases related to juvenile delinquents.
