The floating dust blanketed the city forcing dwellers to stay indoors.

According to a Met official, the dust storm, unexpected at this time of the year, cut visibility to between 90 and 250 metres in some places. "The Al Ain temperature yesterday was 50 degree Celcius," he said, adding that after an hour and half, the temperature dipped to 45 degree Celcius.

According to the official, compared with the other places in the UAE, the humidity in Al Ain was the least — only 25 per cent. Strong winds, which blew from the north and the northwest, recorded a speed of 35 kilometre/hour.

A source from Al Ain International Airport told Khaleej Times that the sand storm did not affect flights.
