The National Centre for Meteorology and Seismology (NCMS) has called on motorists to exercise caution, reduce speed and leave enough distance between vehicles due to active dust storm forecast for today. In a statement released on Wednesday, NCMS warned of the formation of cumulus clouds accompanied by rains and active winds in some eastern regions.
On Tuesday, a heavy sandstorm swept across parts of the Middle East, killing two people and hospitalising hundreds in Lebanon.
Clouds of dust also engulfed Jordan, Israel and Cyprus where aircraft were diverted to Paphos from Larnaca airport as visibility fell to 500 metres.
"We have had sandstorms before, but not of this intensity. It's very rare for this time of year too and it's covering the entire region," a Cypriot metrological office official said.
