A number of UAE firms have embarked a series of employee-led happiness projects inspired by the UAE's 'Year of Giving' and the global One Million Acts of Kindness mission.
Two big organisations - Canon Middle East and Landmark group - are spreading happiness amongst their employees first through workplace and community engagement opportunities.
Landmark Group unveiled a first-of-its-kind 'Happiness Movement' impacting over 40,000 employees across all GCC countries. The group aims to become the region's happiest workplace. The Happiness Movement was rolled-out to Landmarkers, through a three-day power-packed celebration across the group's retail outlets, warehouses and offices, simultaneously engaging all 40,000 employees, irrespective of the country where they are based or the tasks that they perform.
The people-led movement witnessed the roll-out of several initiatives to connect employees, increase overall engagement and drive focus towards employee health and wellness.
"We are creating an environment where our people are consistent drivers of happiness and positivity across the group. Happiness is a journey and we are just getting started," said Nisha Jagtiani, executive director and chief happiness officer of the group.
Leaders from Landmark Group interacted with Landmarkers across the group's diverse network of retail and hospitality outlets, thereby making it one of the largest simultaneously coordinated employee engagement initiative in the region.
Connecting through happiness
The group also introduced Workplace by Facebook to all Landmarkers across the organisation to provide their employees with one common platform to voice their opinions irrespective of designation or function. They can engage with their leaders and colleagues and belong to one large happy community.
The internal community has since been abuzz with thousands of photos submitted by proud Landmarkers who joined their leaders in celebrations held over 100 locations in the region. The campaign has a memorable visual identity and an inspiring anthem, welcomed by employees across the group's warehouses, stores and offices.
Speaking about the 'Happiness Movement', Ohoud Al Roumi, Minister of State for Happiness, said: "I congratulate the Landmark Group on the launch of the Happiness Movement initiative, which aims to create a happy and positive working environment. I am confident that this initiative will have a positive impact not only on Landmark employees but also on the UAE community as a whole. I encourage all private sector companies across the country to follow their example, so we all contribute, in our own way, to making the UAE a happier and more positive place."

Canon Middle East spreads happiness and joy
Canon Middle East has also recently joined the happiness bandwagon and has embarked on a series of employee-led projects. Developed under an overarching campaign called 'Follow Your Happiness,' Canon's initiatives target its own employees by giving them the opportunity to become active members within their own work environment as well as the larger community.
Anurag Agrawal, managing director, Canon Middle East said: "We were inspired by the UAE's 'Year of Giving' and One Million Acts of Kindness initiatives, both of which encourage people to have lifetime goals of doing an act of goodwill for others. This clearly resonates with Canon's global corporate philosophy of 'Kyosei,' which means living and working together for the common good. By delivering social and environmental benefits through our people and products, we are powerfully demonstrating our commitment to our philosophy."
In 2017, Canon Middle East established the 'Follow You Happiness' campaign driven by the three pillars - Future, Youth and Happiness - to coincide with the theme the UAE government.
Furthermore, each time an employee participates in any activity within the three pillars, Canon contributes Dh400 to two charities by the end of 2017.
