A 30-year-old man, accused of trying to kidnap a woman posing as a policeman, has been sentenced to six months in jail.
According to public prosecution records, the man, who holds a Comoros Islands passport, impersonated a police officer in front of the Filipina woman and tried to pull her by force inside his car. But his attempt was foiled as the woman did not believe his claims.
The Dubai Court of First Instance ordered that he be deported after serving his jail time. The public prosecution referred him to trial with a recommendation he got a strict legal penalty. The case dates back to January 9 in Al Rashidiya.
The victim, a 24-year-old working as a supervisor, said during investigation that around half past midnight on the incident night she was waiting for a friend on a street in Al Rashidiya when the defendant came. "He wanted me to ride in his car. He then grabbed my right hand and tried to pull me by force inside."
She recounted to the prosecutor how he kept trying to make her accompany him for about 10 minutes while pretending to be a cop. "He said I had to go with him because I was trying to open the parked cars there. I told him I would only get inside an official police patrol car."
She walked into an alley and he followed her. "He was persistent in his demands to make me ride in his car to talk. He even showed me a driving licence, claiming it was his official work identity card."
When a resident came to check what the screaming was about, the defendant tried to speed off. "As I was about to snap a picture of his car plate number, he tried to snatch my mobile phone. I got scratches after he pushed me and caused me to fall down," she said.
The defendant, who apparently felt scared, fled the scene, the complainant told the investigator. The complainant, who got checked-up at the hospital right after the incident, presented to the investigator a report that she was left with hand scratches.
The defendant confessed during interrogation that he met the woman on the incident night. The court ruling may be appealed.
