Almost 15 months to the day when British expatriate Jane Matthew was found dead at her home in Jumeirah on July 4, 2017, her family says that they feel they can "finally move on".
On Sunday, Jane's husband Francis Matthew had his prison term increased to 15 years by the Court of Appeals, after it modified the charge from assault leading to death to premeditated murder.
The Manning family (Jane's biological family) was left devastated on March 25 when the former newspaper journalist was handed down a 10-year sentence on a modified charge. Autopsy reports stated she was found in her family home with injuries to her forehead and face.
Following that verdict, the family set up the Twitter campaign @wespeakforjane, which fought for her justice. And on Sunday, her brother Peter Manning told Khaleej Times that the Court of Appeals verdict meant they could finally begin to move on.
"We are glad that the verdict has been changed from assault to pre-meditated murder and that the term to be served has been increased to 15 years. We are grateful to the appeal court for focusing on the evidence rather than the hearsay and for putting right what would have been a terrible injustice."
He added that the main thing now was that "poor Jane is no longer being held responsible" for her death.
"The previous verdict moved the blame for this crime onto Jane herself and we were struggling to live with that. Jane is very badly missed but hopefully now we can begin to move on."
