As many as 19 Chinese men were involved in a fight between rival gangs that claimed one's life, the Court of First Instance was told. The men used axes, sticks and knives during the fight.
One of the Chinese, a 33-year-old unemployed man, was also charged with helping one of the accomplices flee the country via Oman, by arranging for a car to transport him to the border point and also accompanying him there.
Two others were also accused of bootlegging.
The incident took place on March 23, last year, in the China cluster in International City. "I heard the sound of sharp weapons being apparently used in a fight. I was on my balcony around 9 pm but I could not see clearly as the people were behind cars. I saw about eight Asian men running to the place to see what it was about," an Egyptian manager, 38, said.
"A while later, an expensive 4WD car stopped and about eight men stepped off carrying axes and sticks. The noise became louder as the number of people involved increased. They all left shortly later in that car and another jeep".
By the time the witness went outside the building, the ambulance and police had arrived.
"There were blood splatters in that spot. I saw a huge axe, of the kind used to cut trees, left there. There was also a black suitcase. The police had cordoned the place off. I got the chance to click one of the car's photos and showed it to the police".
The police found the victim's body in the back seat of a car left with all its doors open, in front of the buildings. Another man was also found in the same car. He was conscious and had a head injury and broken leg.
About an hour past midnight, the witness was called again to go to the same area along with a prosecution member.
"We found most of the suspects had escaped to Fujairah and arrested 14 of them. During interrogation, three of them claimed that one of the runaway accomplices sought their help in a dispute he had with several men, over their dealings with his car rental office," a police lieutenant said.
