A Filipino who was handcuffed when he allegedly resisted police officers trying to take him into custody on drug charges, appeared in court on Thursday.
According to public prosecution records, anti-narcotics officers of the Dubai Police received information that the 34-year-old resident possessed a quantity of crystal meth to sell. The employee was arrested together with a female compatriot, a 45-year-old jobless.
Drugs weighing 8.6gm was seized from them on August 5 last year, which they were allegedly about to sell it. Another small quantity of the same drug was found with the 34-year-old accused for personal use.
A 30-year-old Filipino man (jobless) was also arrested with them and all three have been charged with taking drugs.
In the Court of First Instance, the main accused pleaded not guilty to the charge of physically assaulting a police officer. He admitted possessing drugs, but claimed it was for personal use.
The other two co-defendants were not present in the first hearing.
According to the forensic report, the main accused sustained a minor injury in his lower lip after he attacked the police officer.
"We took them into custody. We were in the parking lot outside the anti-narcotics department and were taking them out of the police car when the main accused attacked me," an anti-narcotics officer said. "He attacked and punched me. I tried to protect myself from further punching. Other officers helped me control him."
However, when the officers asked the defendant about the reason he attacked the officer, he claimed he was joking.
"I had to step in when I saw the accused grabbing my colleague by his clothes. When he was restrained, he claimed he did not want his female friend to be taken into custody," an anti-narcotics sergeant said. Lab reports showed that the defendants' urine tests were positive for drugs.
The second and third accused confessed during the investigation that they got the drugs from the main defendant.
An electronic scale was seized from the latter's car. The trial will continue on February 16.
