Witnesses and photographs depicted flames covering the dome of the hotel but an Atlantis statement said it would not affect the luxury resort’s eagerly anticipated opening onSeptember 24. Nobody was injured.

The fire began in the hotel’s lobby about 7am with the vast plumes of smoke, mainly the result of burning furniture, rising to the sky, according to Brigadier Abdul Jalil Mahdi, Deputy Director of the Criminal Investigation Department for Preventive Security.

It was extinguished by 10am.

Al Mahdi said the fire was suspected to be the result of an electrical fault that caused a short circuit, but an investigation was on to confirm the cause.

Atlantis hotel management said damage to the lobby dome was not significant.

“There was limited damage to the external roof and the lobby dome this morning as a result of a contained fire at Atlantis, Palm Jumeirah resort in Dubai,” said a hotel spokesperson.

“The site was fully evacuated of all staff and no one was injured. All safety and fire systems operated in accordance with the standard operating procedures and emergency services worked quickly to extinguish the fire. Atlantis will open on time on September 24.”

However, residents, who woke up to find their skyline with a thick black cloud of smoke, expressed concern about the ongoing construction on the Palm.

“It was like a big ball of smoke over the whole of Atlantis and then a thinner sheet of smoke over the Palm,” said Clemens Pongratz, a resident.

“There’s so much construction going on; there’s always a risk.

“Trucks are always going past and work is continuing at a furious pace on towers.”

However others, such as Barry Judge, said they had not been affected by the fire, which also caused developers Nakheel to increase security and redirect traffic away from the crescent where the resort is located.

“I just saw that there was a security guard directing traffic from a Frond slip road towards the exit, which makes sense because it’s one of the roads leading to the Atlantis.”
