First Day of Muharram Paid Holiday for Private Sector

ABU DHABI — The first day of Muharram, which marks the start of the new Hijri calendar year, is a paid holiday for all workers at companies and establishments of the UAE private sector, the Ministry of Labour announced in a circular on Tuesday.

The decision is based on Article 74 of Federal Law No. 8/ 1980 (and amendments) which regulates the relationship between employers and employees.

The ministry took the opportunity to congratulate the President His Highness Shaikh Khalifa bin Zayed Al Nahyan, His Highness Shaikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Vice-President and Prime Minister of the UAE and Ruler of Dubai, and their brethren, Members of the Supreme Council and Rulers of the Emirates and expressed best wishes of prosperity and glory for the people of the UAE and people of the Arab and Muslim nations. —
