Five Vietnamese men, aged between 19 and 34, have been charged with physical assault at the Dubai Court of First Instance after they allegedly assaulted an Egyptian man and left him with multiple injuries and hearing and memory loss.
The 30-year-old Egyptian man is accused of robbing one of his attackers out of five mobile phones, three sunglasses and two necklaces and consuming alcohol without a permit. The five Vietnamese are detained while the Egyptian has been bailed out. The incident took place on May 3, last year, and was reported at Al Muraqqabat police station.
During investigation, the Egyptian man, a receptionist, recounted that he went with a friend to a flat to attend a birthday party on the day of the incident. "It was after 7.30pm when we got inside the flat. There were five men and two women, all Vietnamese. My friend was talking to them when they had an altercation in which he insulted them."
He then left with his friend. "My friend went back to his flat while I went to a nearby supermarket. As I walked out, I was attacked by the same men whom I had just seen at the flat. They had knives and sharp tools. I fainted after they slashed me with the knives on my head and face. All of them assaulted me and a woman kicked me as I lay down," the receptionist told the prosecutor.
The assault victim added that he fell into a coma for some time and he still gets treatment for the severe injuries he sustained.
One of the Vietnamese, a 29-year-old jobless, said that their flat was being used for massage services. He claimed that the Egyptian man went there to demand money. "He followed me as I went to the kitchen to check the surveillance cameras. He then stole my belongings while threatening me with a knife."
A 30-year-old Syrian woman, who was driving at 10.40pm in the neighbourhood where the assault incident happened, said she witnessed the five men assaulting the victim with knives, a sword and sticks while he bled profusely. She called the police.
