The Dubai Police human rights department has intervened to return five students to their school which refused to provide them with their certificates as the father failed to pay the school fees. The family could not register the students for the current academic year because the school had withheld their certificates after the cheque given by the father bounced.
Dr Mohammed Al Murr, director, general department of human rights said the mother had contacted the department to intervene in the case of her five children aged 14, 13, 10, 8 and 6. He said the children were being neglected by the father and by the school which victimised the children for not fault of theirs.
Al Murr said the department has contacted the school and requested it to hand over the certificates to the mother and take legal action against the father if he refuses to pay. Since the school accepts cheques, they should approach the legal authorities if the cheque bounces instead of penalising children, he added.
Captain Ali Ahmed Al Shahi, acting director of the child and women protection department said it has come to their notice that many fathers are neglecting payment of schools fees of their children.
Captain Ali pointed out that the school has no right to prevent students from attending school especially in a situation where the mother is seriously ill and yet is working to look after the children.
He added that the human right department would stand by the children and protect their rights.
