Three men came to the UAE on visit visas and carried out a daring $5.5-million robbery at a villa in Dubai, a court has heard. Dubai prosecutors accused the three Chilean nationals of targeting the villa in Emirates Hills on February 25 as its owners, a British couple, were away.
According to the police, the accused hatched the plan in their home country. A police corporal testified that he questioned the thieves. "After landing at the Dubai International Airport, they rented a car. They stayed in Deira and looked for potential targets."
The 66-year-old complainant, a businessman, said one of his domestic workers discovered the theft at 8:45pm on February 25. He said the thieves got away with 14 watches worth $1.5 million belonging to his wife. "They also stole my wife's jewellery items worth $4 million; other jewellery items worth $14,000; my $50,000 watch; handbags worth $15,000; and three sunglasses worth $6,000."
In his deposition before the public prosecution investigator, the businessman said the thieves also got away with large amounts of money of different currencies. Apart from the robbery charge, the defendants were also accused of damaging private property. They damaged the villa window lock, a closet door and broke open a safe.
A ruling will be pronounced on June 24.
