Sheikh Dr Muhammad Ayoub, aged 65, former imam of the Prophet's Mosque in Madinah, died at dawn on Saturday.

According to a report in Saudi Gazette funeral prayer for his soul was performed on Saturday at the Prophet's Mosque after mid-day (Dhuhr) prayer and he was buried in Baqee' Al Gharqad Graveyard.

The scholar's son announced his death on Twitter early on Saturday. Thousands of people attended his funeral prayer at the Prophet's Mosque.

According to the report Sheikh Ayoub, who was born in Makkah, studied and memorised the Holy Quran at the age of 12.

He was taught by Zaki Daghastani and Sheikh Khaleel Abdulrahman Al Qari at Binladin Mosque. He studied the Holy Quran, the interpretation of its verses and Quran sciences by several sheikhs including Sheikh Muhammad Sayyid Tantawi, Sheikh Abdulaziz Muhammad Othman, Sheikh Akram Dhiya Al Amri, Sheikh Muhammad Al Amin Al Shiqiti and Sheikh Abdulmuhsin Al Abbad.

The late Sheikh Muhammad Ayoub had two wives and his family comprised 13 people. He is survived by five sons, Al Arabiya website reported.
