A new heart awareness campaign launched in the UAE as part of the global World Heart Day initiative on September 29 will provide complimentary cholesterol, blood sugar and pressure tests, and BMI (body-mass index) scores at Zulekha hospitals in Sharjah and Dubai.
The hospital's 'Heart Care Campaign' is designed to encourage residents to take better care of their health by arranging regular check-ups and tests.
If a patient's results are a cause for concern, a follow-up appointment will be arranged with one of the hospital's cardiologists to reduce the risk of developing cardiac-related problems in the future.
"Heart disease continues to be one of the biggest threats to the health of UAE nationals and residents, which is why our drive to encourage the community to take advantage of the free tests on World Heart Day is so important," said Zanubia Shams, CEO of Zulekha Hospital.
Dr Srinivasan Kandasamy, specialist cardiologist at Zulekha Hospital, noted that even seemingly small steps can make an important difference to one's health.
"Initiatives such as the World Heart Day exist to help drive home the message that heart disease can be prevented, with some small, daily changes to our lifestyles," he said. "People from all walks of life in the UAE are affected by cardiovascular disease. Awareness and regular check-ups are the answer. Health education regarding heart disease is very important to prevent heart failure and associated risks.
"The medical profession is already working to increase the awareness of adopting a balanced diet, maintaining regular exercise and making the necessary lifestyle changes in order to improve heart health in the UAE."
