Fujairah and Dibba Fujairah municipalities have embarked on a plan to demolish 3,500 dilapidated houses in the emirate by the end of 2020. The move is part of the initiatives of the President, His Highness Shaikh Khalifa bin Zayed Al Nahyan, for developing the areas by replacing houses constructed before 1990.
Mohammed Saif Al Afkham, Director-General of Fujairah Municipality, said the emirate and its environs house more than 2,500 old houses.
Al Afkham said all these houses have become unsuitable for living and some have been deserted. "Some old houses have been rented out to expatriates and they pose a danger to the occupants. The deserted houses too pose a security threat," said Al Afkham.
Fujairah Municipality, according to him, will demolish all these houses and the owners will either to be compensated in cash as was the case with other dilapidated houses, or will be allotted new plots of lands.
"By 2020, Fujairah will be free of old houses," he added.
Director-general of Dibba Fujairah, Hussein Al Yamahi, said his department, in cooperation with the Fujairah Corporation, has completed an in-depth field study on the condition of the old and dilapidated houses in Dibba city and its environs. "The study revealed that more than 1,000 old houses built before 1990 exists in Al Bidiya, Sharm, Didhna and on the outskirts of Dibba Fujairah," he said.
