A gang of six men stood trial on Tuesday accused of breaking into a villa and robbing Dh 430,000 worth of expensive watches, jewelry, smart phones, tablets, purses, and perfume.
The six, all Sri Lankans, are on visit visas except one who is a cleaner. They are accused of forcibly entering the villa in Al Mizhar, Al Qusais, on July 9 at night after climbing a fence, break-opening a window and then breaking into a room with sharp tools before making away with hundreds of thousands worth of valuables.
They denied charges of forced robbery at night and trespass in the Court of First Instance. The six men, aged between 27 and 48 years, are all in detention.
The cleaner, aged 36, admitted involvement in the heist. He said that they had rented a car earlier that day. One of them stayed out while the others broke into the villa where they stayed for about 30 minutes. They walked out through the door with the stolen items and one of them kept them before fleeing the country.
The villa's resident, a 45-year-old Egyptian, said that he was out of Dubai and when he came back on July 9 he found that his villa in Al Mizhar had been robbed: "There were signs of forced entry. The room's lock was broken and the place was in a mess," he said.
The police arrested two of the men on trial in Sharjah on July 17. They led the cops to other accomplices. Lots of accessories were found in the defendants' places which they admitted they had stolen.
A ruling will be announced on December 6.
