The Ministry of Economy has announced that prices of consumer goods and staple food items in Ramadan will be discounted up to 90 per cent of their original price across the UAE.
This was announced by Dr Hashim Al Nuaimi, Director of Consumer Protection Department at the Ministry of Economy, in a press conference at the Sharjah Union Co-op headquarters on Wednesday.
The discount rates are the highest the UAE has seen in years due to greater market competitiveness and increased consumer demand, according to an Emarat Al Youm report.
The Sharjah Cooperative Society has also allocated Dh30 million to subsidise 1,000 food items during Ramadan.
The step comes as part of its initiative to reduce financial burdens on consumers, with 50-70 per cent discounted prices on goods, said Majid Salem Al Junaid, Director General of the Sharjah Cooperative Society.
The discount period starts from today and will continue till the end of Ramadan, he added.
Ministry inspections will be carried out throughout this period to maintain quality control and compliance with safety and consumer protection standards.
