Here is how Dubai residents can cut electricity bills by 90%

Savings can come up to Dh984 per year.

Residents will soon be able to cut their energy bills by 90 per cent as Dubai Lamp will be released in markets by end of this month, Dubai Municipality officials said on Monday.
Announced last October, Dubai Lamp has a life span of up to 25 years and will produce 200 lumens through one watt, cutting electricity bills by up to 90 per cent at the rate of Dh4,000 a year.

Savings can come up to Dh984 per year, compared to the old lamps, which used to cost around Dh3,000 a year.
Dubai Lamp, which will be available in four models for residential indoor lighting, is expected to save Dubai Dh400 million annually, as the lights will lead to less consumption of electricity.
The civic body has also signed MOUs with five government entities who will install various models of Dubai Lamp in their existing buildings and upcoming projects.
To begin with, more than 2,000 of the mosques in Dubai will switch to the energy saving Dubai Lamps.
Khalid Sharif Al Awadhi, Assistant Director General of Dubai Municipality for Environment, Health and Safety Control Sector, said the first phase will focus on installing Dubai Lamp throughout all government entities, and the next phase will focus on the private sector.
Dubai aims to supply two million lamps for residential and professional use across the city in 2017, which is expected to be increased to 10 million lamps by 2021. By end of this month, at least 40,000 lamps are expected to be installed in different buildings.
MoUs have been signed with Roads and Transport Authority (RTA) that will soon add the lamps to its metro and bus stations.
Sheikh Zayed Housing Programme will use the energy efficient lamps in their coming housing projects and the Islamic Affairs and Charitable Activities Department already installed the lamps in three of its mosques.
Dubai Municipality had earlier announced it will also make it mandatory for new buildings under construction to implement Dubai Lamps.
"In the beginning, we will concentrate on replacing conventional lights in new buildings. The next phase will focus on old buildings after studying the implementation mechanism. Our next step will be big complexes such as schools, hospitals, mosques and other big buildings," said Al Awadhi.
Dubai Municipality, in partnership with each entity, will assist in carrying out a feasibility study to assess the potential savings as a result of using Dubai Lamp for indoor lighting purposes.
Actual results and savings will be shared with Dubai Municipality by each entity for improvement and monitoring.

Government entities that will use Dubai Lamp
- The Islamic Affairs and Charitable Activities Department
- Dubai World Trade Centre
- Ministry of Climate Change and Environment
- Roads and Transport Authority (RTA)
- Sheikh Zayed Housing Programme.

The lamp will be available in four models both in cool daylight and warm white colours:
- 1W Candle Lamp to replace 25W incandescent lamp
- 2W Bulb to replace 40W incandescent lamp
- 3W Bulb to replace 60W incandescent lamp
- 3W MR16 Spot to replace 50W halogen spots.
