A 38-year-old housemaid was sentenced to three months in jail by the Court of First Instance on Sunday on a theft charge.
The Indonesian maid has been charged with stealing a pair of golden earrings, clothes and accessories worth about Dh 1,500 from her employer's house.
She has also been accused of practising witchcraft and sorcery.
She allegedly took photos of the family members in the house where she worked and practiced witchcraft on them.
The court ordered that she be deported.
The woman's employer, a Jordanian businessman, 28, said that the maid was exposed when they found out that a pair of golden earrings was missing.
"It was about 9 pm on October 19, last year. My sister suspected it was the maid because she had stolen from us before then apologised vowing not to do it again."
However, when the employer's sister asked the maid about the earrings the latter denied having seen it.
"My sister found the earrings and other stuff we thought were lost in the maid's closet."
The complainant and his sister also found three personal photos of their mother and her two grandsons torn with pins in it and next to it symbols and strange writings.
The defendant reportedly later admitted to the police that she stole from her employer and also confessed to the policewomen that she had begun practicing sorcery.
A woman police lieutenant quoted the maid as admitting, when she took her aside, to having kept the children's photos and put pins on it so that they would love her and so do other family members. But she claimed she did not go through with her practice.
The verdict may be appealed.
