A 29-year-old housemaid was, on Monday, sentenced to 15 years in prison for killing a man, with whom she allegedly had paid sex. She was found guilty for setting his house on fire, while he lay there in a highly intoxicated. He died due to inhalation of excessive smoke.
Z.A., a Bangladeshi, allegedly set a sofa on fire and then closed the door and disposed of the key, taking advantage that the victim was unconscious.
She has also been accused in the Court of First Instance of prostitution as she is believed to have had sex with the victim's friend (referred to the Court of Misdemeanours) for Dh1,000 and stealing the victim's mobile phones and jewellery (two rings and a gold necklace). She has also been charged with consuming alcohol without a licence. The court ordered her deportation.
An Indian maid, 46, has been jailed for three years and deportation on the charge of sexually exploiting Z.A. and another Bangladeshi woman, 26. The latter has also been sentenced to three-year imprisonment and deportation for working in prostitution.
A police lieutenant said that a fire was reported in a flat in Al Muhaisna 4 in Al Qusais around 11pm on March 3, 2015.
"The body of the victim, which was in the corridor leading to the bedroom, did not bear any marks of assault," said the lieutenant.
The police also noticed that the door of the flat was closed, which raised their suspicions that it was arson.
The police officers checked the CCTV footage of the building which showed the victim returning to his place around 4pm.
Around 10.20pm, Z.A. left the victim's place. "She was caught on camera shutting the door quickly. Few minutes later, smoke began to come out from the flat."
Two men, who were earlier with the victim, admitted, when questioned, that they visited him and called the 46-year-old accused (Indian maid) to bring prostitutes.
Z.A. reportedly admitted in the investigation that she had sex with one of the men and stayed with the victim upon his request to have sex with him.
She claimed that the victim was badly drunk and got upset with her because of the many phone calls she was getting on her phone. They had an argument also over sex.
She took advantage that the victim was in an inebriated state and stole his belongings. She then set his clothes on fire and threw them on the sofa in the living room. She left the flat after locking the door and disposing of the key.
The victim's stolen belongings were recovered from Z.A.'s place.
The verdict may be appealed.
